Highland Velvet by Jude Deveraux

PLOT: Bronwyn MacArran was a proud Scot. Stephen Montgomery was one of the hated English.

He came to Scotland as a conqueror, saw her beauty and was vanquished. But still she would abhor him.

She owned a temper hot enough to forge the armors of battle or inflame a valiant soldier's passion. Yet still she would resist him.

She became his reason to live, his reason to love. And still she would deny him.

But while clan fought clan, while brother took up sword against brother, and the highlands ran with blood -- their destiny was made... and this mighty warrior pledged himself to his woman's pride, her honor and her name -- and made of their love a torch to burn through the ages!

Will I recommend it?

I think not.  I was not comfortable reading the first chapters. It took me almost 3 years to pick the book again and read it all over. The most reason why I'm not recommending it are the sensual scenes Bronwyn and Stephen does every single chapter. Definitely, one of the books that I have keep to myself. I don't want others to think that I'm enjoying reading those parts. Haha.

If I were to choose whose side I'm going to take, I would definitely take Stephen's. Lucky for Bronwyn she got him as her husband. Bronwyn's too stubborn to handle. I understand she would do everything for her clan to the extent of even getting herself into harm. I wished she was not that blind to see that Stephen's trying his best to get her trust. Stephen had sacrificed and changed enough not to be noticed. I hope she gets to understand that of course, they are reared from different worlds, she's a Scot and Stephen is a proud English. She should not generalize the English people and start to work with her husband. Both have to adapt.

About the ending, there's nothing special about it. Some scenes are irrelevant. I hate to think that Stephen is such a pity. I don't know why I'm feeling disappointed when I knew Stephen changed his family name into McArran. It doesn't sound good to me.

Probably, this is one of the stories I'll just forget.  I know Jude Deveraux had tried. Aside from the love of historical romance novels, my interest of the beauty of Scotland even grows. I just love the highlands suddenly.

Nana (Live Action Movie)

As previously mentioned, I got to watch the film from the song Endless Story. The movie is touching, talking about how friendship stemmed from two young women of different perspectives.

Synopsis:
their first meeting in the train
As the title implies, the story evolves about two young women of the same name, Nana who happened to meet in a train by coincidence. The first Nana is a carefree woman whose only purpose is to see her boyfriend in Tokyo while the other Nana is an ambitious vocalist (she's a member of the band BLACK STONES or BLAST) who wants to get her band famous. This Nana has a bitter past she wanted to keep for herself (this includes about her boyfriend who left them for another band, Trapnest). Though their first encounter was short, their paths crossed again when suddenly the carefree Nana was forced by her boyfriend to find a new place to stay (he said she can't live in his apartment forever..ouch!) then fortunately found a cheaper place to rent at Rm 707 (in which in Japanese, Nana means seven also). The carefree Nana was about to take the apartment when suddenly the vocalist Nana came in. There was a short misunderstanding, but then both decided to live together.

Nana's BLAST bandmates
the rival band, Trapnest with Nana's boyfriend as the guitarist
And a series of events happened and the two Nanas came to face their ups and downs while living together. As the two got closer, they realized they both need each other. The carefree Nana was called 'Hachi' (being childish at times) by the other Nana. The vocalist Nana starts to open up her past which make Hachi understand her.

the scene when Hachi decided to wait for his loser boyfriend from work
then finds out her bf cheated on her

Why I like it?
Despite the viewer's critics as being dull, poor in acting and it's fast-pacing approach compared to the anime, the Live action gave justice to the original. I nearly cried at the ending:)) It copied almost everything most especially, the casting. Although I have to complain about the ending in Nana part 1 but the viewers need not to fret because there's a sequel. I thought that the vocalist Nana will remain cold and bitter but as the movie goes on, I'm happy to know that her character turned into a caring, sister figure of Hachi. Little by little with the help of her bandmates, they were able to establish their band and was able to create a larger fanbase in Japan. That was such a kind of achievement brought from moving on and the ambition she carried for herself. This teaches us that everyone needs someone to turn to, time heals and just keep on pushing the dream.

Will I recommend it?
Of course yes, if you want to witness their kind of friendship, then this is for you but there are some scenes that might not suitable for younger ones and needs parental discretion.

Hope you'll like it,

The Relevance of Edmond Dantes' Life to Jose Rizal

NOTE: I've posted this blog so as to help students have an idea on how to compare the above mentioned names and by no means allow you to copy-paste all what has stated down here. It is best you construct your own idea or opinion about the subject matter. Wishing you all the best!

---------------------------------------------------------------
A.  How will you depict the life story of Edmond Dantes and Dr. Jose Rizal if you believe in conspiracy and as a victim of duplicity and a Machiavellian Plot?

Answer:
I can depict the life story of the two subjects Edmond Dantes and Dr. Jose Rizal by basing and looking at the experiences they have gone though. It is true that Edmond Dantes and Dr. Jose Rizal is in a similar situation much like a victim of duplicity and a Machiavellian Plot because they were victims of injustice and a betrayal that they don’t deserve. They believed that in doing good, they will reap a better outcome but it was the other way around. Instead, they were betrayed and plotted that drawn both of them to so much confusion and at first disbelief. Both were charged of a crime they didn’t really commit much to the disappointment that some of their trusted friends and comrades were the ones doing the selfish motive: to pull them down and eventually fall into their traps.

In the case of Edmond Dantes, he brought with him without knowing it, a compromising letter addressed to Nortier de Villefort, the Bonapartist father of Gerard de Villefort. Realizing what happened and mostly convinced of the innocence of Dantes, the king's judge sent Dantes to the Château d'If, as a state prisoner. Just like Jose Rizal who believed to be sent as a volunteer physician in Cuba but was held and detained for a while in Montjuich Castle realizing Gov. Gen Blanco was behind all of the conspiracy.

B. Compare and contrast the historical background of Dr. Jose Rizal and Edmond Dantes in:

 1. Politics

During the time of Rizal, the Spanish government was so corrupt that it took advantage the helpless Filipinos or Indios in terms of power and freedom. All they were concerned of was to generate more money not by their own hands but with the help of our fellow Filipinos who were maltreated and abused if they don’t follow their orders. Several unjustifiable laws have been promulgated just for their own benefit and not for the sake of the Filipino people which is unfair. That’s why Dr. Jose Rizal thought that there’s a need for national consciousness before it’s too late. His trial is a proof of Spanish injustice and misrule. His case was prejudged, he was considered guilty before the actual trial. It accepted all charges and testimonies against him and ignored all arguments and proofs in his favor.

In Edmond Dantes’ time of setting, politics had played a crucial role in the lives of the people living in Europe as Bonapartism was mentioned in the story. This is about the adaptation of principles of the French Revolution to suit Napoleon's imperial form of rule. If you are against it, then you are a subject of treason.

2. Education

Dr. Jose Rizal was indeed a genius in his time. He was exemplary in all aspects, be it into the field of arts or in sciences. Education for him was indispensable to the progress of man. To grasp higher knowledge, he took courage to go abroad and pursue his studies in the field of medicine. While in Europe, the French revolution and the movements of thought influenced Rizal’s thoughts. It made him a learned man having read many books including Alexandre Dumas’ book The Count of Monte Cristo which served as one of his basis to write his own novel concerning the Spanish misrule of his country Philippines.

Edmond Dantes, on the other hand, didn’t get that privilege to get an education like Rizal did. He didn’t know much about politics or so until such time when he was imprisoned. He happened to meet a fellow prisoner in the name of Abbe Faria, a priest. By that, Faria came to give the illiterate Dantès an extensive education in mathematics, literature, philosophy, economics, hand and sword combat and military strategy for eight years. He also helped Dantès discover why he himself was imprisoned.

3. Religion

When Jose Rizal was young, his mother taught him to be a religious person as he was baptized a Roman Catholic. The bible was one of the books that supplemented his faith in God. But there was a time he saw religion didn’t make sense when some friars didn’t act the way they should be. His retraction also has been a controversy over the years whether he retracted his religious errors or not.

Dantes believed there is God whose goodness will make the life fair and with justice until he spends six years in solitary confinement, first seeking and then blaming God for his suffering. Edmond Dantes lost faith in God and everything he ever stood for. He was just waiting to die.

4. Financial status

Jose Rizal belonged to a middle-class family. His parents were both from a prominent ancestry. Their lands and Rizal’s high-quality education are proofs that they’re someone who could afford especially when Jose decided to go abroad and they have to send him his allowance.

Edmond Dantes the hero is a sailor from a poor background. He could not read nor write which means he had no business befriending wealth and royal Fernando Mondego but the good thing about him was that he was a good person who won favour everywhere he goes.

5. Love.

Our foremost national hero, Rizal had also experienced falling in love into the charm of women he meets but one thing remarkable about him is that he didn’t forget his duty, and that is to help first his fellowmen from the abusive clutches of the Spaniards. Although he has that urge, he never forgets to send his love by sending letters to his family and friends letting them know he’s alright.

In Edmond’s case, he was not lucky in love because right after he was imprisoned, his girlfriend Mercedes married Mondego and by that virtue, it just shows that Mercedes easily gave up her vows with Edmond.

6. Society
Rizal was at the time when the society only favors to those who are in power. Ordinary people suffered a lot from the cruelty and the injustices of the Spanish government. There was no equality of treatment but rather a society wherein it was ruled by tyranny and is ran by money.

Edmond Dantes was in a society where ignorance doesn’t have a place to set in. A society in which wealth, title and prestige only matters and is regarded by many.

C. Moral lesson

The lesson that I learned from the movie is that life is not always fair. We have to accept the fact that there are really circumstances in life which opts to be unacceptable and thus unfair because if we just have to learn how to deal with it, we might find a better solution how to get through it. Like a wheel, it has ups and downs so might as well make yourself strong when sometimes you’re feeling down.

Another is vengeance is not ours, it’s God’s. Although Dantes was right in taking revenge against his enemies, but then this doesn’t make him fully satisfied. God knows everything, be it right or wrong and it is his will what will happen. No bad deed will go unpunished as one had said so we should let God do the justice because after all, we will go to him when our time comes. In his eyes, he sees the truth, he distinguishes the real and the lie and he balances the good and the bad.
And lastly, whatever comes from selfish motives, one will suffer at the end.

D. Justification

I just want to justify that The Count of Monte Cristo is somehow related to Rizal’s life in such a way that it talks about betrayal, injustice, jealousy, conspiracy, and revenge. Though not to the point that Rizal wanted to show revenge like Edmond did but in a way that he wants the Spanish government to realize their mistakes in ruling their colonized country.

In the movie, Edmond was charged in committing treason while Rizal was charged for three crimes: treason, sedition and illegal association. Both of them were not given a chance to further defend themselves in the court because they were condemned already before the trial began and plotted evidences were shown to make the accusations against them strong.

Indeed, The Count of Monte Cristo is a great movie. This is the movie that showed us that not all the time we have to remain silent but also have to fight when needed.

The Conjuring: not that scary at all..........:-(

Unlike everybody's impression about this movie, I probably have to go the other way. For me, it's thumbs down! Sad to say, it just wasted my money and it really broke my expectation that this movie could make me scream and shout in horror. Just because my classmates were making an impression that this movie would make you freak out of horror, we chose to watch this at school. I thought me and my friends would enjoy the thrills and the like when all we did was to wait for a VERY scary scene to come up. Well, you see the movie will make you nervous, will make you excited what would be the next but then it failed to make a shocking impact. I don't know how the scary thing affect to most viewers but I was really bored trying to connect how's the story going. (I hope you don't blame me for that).

For me, it was all throughout predictable. Aside from it is a demonic exorcism, it also involves paranormal activity which is for me a boring part to include. Well, I got so many questions about the doll, Annabelle. How is she related to the witch and whose spirit does this doll possessed? All these questions were hanging inside my mind that I even have to find the entire synopsis of the film. Even the ending is not that impressive at all. Sorry guys but I would prefer an 80's horror film like Hell raiser over this. The Conjuring is just OK but is not worth watching. 3 out of 5 stars for me.

I want more thrill,

J-dramas Fever......Otomen Live Action

As we spend our remaining days before school, we watched this Japanese drama and I think I learned something from it.

Otomen (Live Action) is a nice and a cute story about a guy who secretly likes girly things such as pink, stuffed toys and mangas and loves doing things such as sewing and cooking. Well, I just want to clarify that even though he likes all these things but he is a straight handsome man who excels in academics and in martial arts especially in kendo. Even though he has this unusual abilities, he just chose not to show it or else he'll break his promise to his mother. A promise that he will be a real man unlike his father.
certified otomen!!
The entire series centers about the love story of Masamune Asuka (the otomen) and Miyakozuka Ryo. Ryo, is the love interest of Asuka and is also good in martial arts. Even though she is a girl but she is not good in cooking and sewing, that's why Asuka feels the urge to help her when she is in trouble.

The casts made this drama a cute one because their faces are so kawaii especially Asuka and Tonomine. We also laughed because of the poor Isono who turns to be everybody's jest. Over all, the series is light and I see no boring moments after all.
Can I call you my crush, Isono-kun? LOL

Well, Otomen taught me to be true and honest at all times because if you'll just keep your true self from others, you won't achieve your true happiness within. Though the ending is not that awesome (I think it was the same ending as Yamato Nadeshiko but Ryo comes to be the intruder during the wedding) but I would still give 4 stars out of 5.

What makes my Wednesday night HA-HA-HAPPY :D

Oh yeah!!
Every Wednesday evening, we always get this non-stop laughs with my siblings. It is because my old favorite comedy show is back! Thanks to Jeepney TV they brought PWEDENG- PWEDE again.

When this show was aired way back 1999, I was five years old then. If I'm not mistaken, its time slot was every Wednesday night (same time as we are watching it now on Jeepney TV).

This show takes my stress away as they make me laugh to their cantankerous acts and their funny spoofs. Won't you laugh if you see the funny looks of the late Redford White and Palito, plus packed with the action superstar Robin Padilla? It is really funny, I swear you will laugh. (if you're not a KJ!!)

Though some casts in the show were now gone like the ones mentioned and the late Nida Blanca but for me they are still alive. They are still making other people laugh because of their sitcoms. They are really the faces of Philippine comedy and these names will never fade in this industry.
a screenshot of Robin Padilla.

Pwedeng-pwede is one of my favorite comedy shows. Even though it is an old TV show but still, I'm loving it. I hope ABS-CBN could make a funny sitcom like this one because  nowadays as what I've observed, Philippine Television is more on reviving and remaking what has been a trend years ago. So to speak, no originality! I'm now sick and tired of watching love stories! Duh!

Back to the topic, this show fills my happiness during the night. If you try to watch this you may be hooked with it. As for my case, I really love it. I even try not miss a single episode.

Well, this ends my thoughts about the show. Jeepney TV is so brilliant they bring me back to my childhood memories. I'm looking forward to the next Wednesday's episode. I'm so excited.

The girl of 1990s,
Cindy♥♥

Upon going to Cebu Common Treatment Facility Incorporated (CCTFI)

photo from cctfi.com
The thought of going to Inayawan dumpsite  made me so interested for some reasons. I know I would be seeing a huge mountain of garbages and smelling it but I wanted to know how is the condition of this dumpsite now. Well, as we were heading our way to the water treatment office, my scrutinizing eyes witnessed how all our trashes were being dumped. Yes, I was appalled on the huge mount of garbages while ignoring the ‘heavenly like’ smell and the pestering ‘big as a bee’ flies trying to get near us but I never realized that despite of having the dumpsite in the place, will also be a water treatment facility and it is the Cebu Common Treatment Facility Incorporated.

This facility treats hazardous wastes generated by the electroplating industry, and other industries that produces the same kind of waste. It offers environmental services to treat their client’s wastes. They do the following: wastewater treatment in their modern facility, handling and transport of the hazardous wastes, designing solutions for special wastewater and collecting sludge for treatment. Upon arriving to the said facility, we were then introduced by the lecturer to explain all about the water treatment process and how they do the treating by using their modern equipment. The wastewater treatment involves in these various processes: waste transport, analysis, storage, treatment, disposal, sludge treatment and its disposal.

Courtesy by cctfi.com
For me, it is not an easy job because the lecturer told us that various chemicals were being used and its calibration is very important for the water treatment process to be successful. Also, we were introduced to their machines and tanks that gave us an idea how they control the chemicals to be used and where the water passes throughout the treatment. The facility is treating rinse water from plating lines or pickling baths, inorganic heavy metal-containing acidic or alkaline solutions, and galvanizing wastewater from their clients.

We were also able to get inside their laboratory where we were shown how they do the water sampling. Depending on the composition of the wastewater, the chemist will propose appropriate procedures for its treatment. In regards to that, the chemist showed to us how much of an element is present in the water by putting a little nickel on the water sample and placed it inside the photometer. After a few seconds, the photometer detected about 10% nickel present in the water. That made us all amazed about how easy the procedure was.

Lastly, the lecturer discussed the sludge in which it is residual, semi-solid material left from the wastewater treatment process. They accept sludge from companies with their own wastewater treatment plants and a pre-treatment of the accepted sludge is done by skilled operators before being sent to accredited facilities for disposal options. The process of sludge treatment includes drying of sludge using their solar sludge dryer, grinding it if necessary, mixing it with chemicals and cure it for final disposal. That was my first time seeing the sludge placed inside a barrel. It was sticky and we were prohibited to touch it because of its smell too.

Well, I learned a lot from this visit. My questions have been answered. Although the treated water is not potable drinking water, it still assures us that the returned water in the areas of Mactan is free from toxic substances. I just hope that facilities like CCTFI, should monitor their equipments from time to time so as to further improve its performance in providing a clean treated water. I saluted all the staffs there in doing their job with dedication in providing clean water in the community.

GUYTON'S BOOK OF MEDICAL PHYSIOLOGY (Review)

seventh edition of the book
Yaay....I'm done with my physiology subject this sem! I just hope that I will pass. LOL! Well, to those who took a pre-med course will certainly relate with me because Physiology is really a challenging subject. I can say you should put more efforts on to your studies if you don't want to get a failing grade. As for us, we should pass it or we can't get more major subjects next sem because this one is the prerequisite for the professional subjects. Even though how many times I tried to be interested in this subject, I just can't because of the many terminologies that should be instilled in to our minds. Our sessions were more on laboratory activities than lectures that's why I found it so hard to relate quickly (hello, I'm not genius:))).

But my worries lessened when our teacher introduced to us an alternative yet an effective book to understand physio well and this is Arthur Guyton's Textbook of Medical Physiology. Yeah, you read it right. The book may be a bit heavy and you may see the contents so boring (lesser pictures!) but it's just worth it. Just take time reading it patiently and the book will explain it further to you. It also contains parts and diagrams for you to connect how the mechanisms of our body work such as the mechanism of respiration, digestion, and even the pathway of blood into our heart. One system may contain at least 70-100 pages for you to read as it will explain it to you specifically. The book may be bought in a low price but I just borrowed it from the library. So if your library has one, then you can borrow it overnight.

stressed me during the finals
I'm not saying that this book will make you pass the subject. Hmm...Just try skimming the book if you are tired of the many powerpoint slides which you find it hard to comprehend.  Guyton's book of medical physiology was a reference my teacher used so if you have some problems understanding what your teacher was saying then try scan its pages. It really helped me a lot.

So that ends my sentiments about Guyton's book. I hope it helped you in choosing the right book to study physiology. As for me, higher grades in this subject doesn't matter as long as you understand what you've studied! Just have fun as you are exploring learning things under this.  Good luck fellas! .. Yohoo!

REACTION ABOUT THE MOVIE ‘SICKO’

Upon watching the movie entitled ‘Sicko’, we were appalled and at first couldn’t believe that America, one of the powerful countries in the world, would also have some problems in regards to providing a universal health care and services to their citizens. The idea never occurred into our inquisitive minds until this movie let us see the bitter reality what the aforementioned country is facing right now. We didn’t know that even in there, they were able to throw someone out just because she didn’t have money to pay the bill in the hospital and for us, it was a shocking revelation. We thought America couldn’t do that. At one moment we realized that if America had some shortcomings toward their health care aspect, how much the Philippines have! What do we know about how our healthcare insurance goes as they do?

We suddenly reacted to one of the clips in the movie where a man mended his wound by himself and to the part where the film maker gave the costs of operation if the patient will go on to the surgery of reattaching his fingers. It was sad that they had troubles in availing health care just because they didn’t sign up for an insurance. Then we ask ourselves, do we really need the thing? Also, we saw an elderly still working just to sustain their medicines because his health insurance couldn’t cover it up! We were confused, we thought that if we apply for a healthcare insurance, we will be able to get the benefits as well as the treatment we needed but sadly, it was not the case then.

Our hearts wrenched listening to each of the stories people were pouring out. We saw their pain, their loss and discouragements as they narrated how their health insurance worked when they needed it the most. The movie opened our blinded eyes why some insurance companies kept on denying applications that should have been their responsibility to save people’s lives and to prolong it. They should have the CONSCIENCE to help them, not to ignore them because they pay for it. We irked at the idea that when less care is given to everyone, the more profit they will produce. So that’s the reason why they keep on giving unreasonable excuses which we thought so immature.

Into the brighter side, we truly admired European countries who really prioritize the welfare of their citizens. We never imagined that their medical healthcare would be for free as well as their medicines in such a lower price. We were also amazed that their government finds a way to provide jobs and gets their youths a high quality college education for free! There’s a vacation allowance too. Upon knowing all of this, we were so curious we kept on saying we will be migrating there but then we realized that the people there also pay higher taxes in exchange to the privileges they were availing.

Well, It was nice to hear people saying they had a good life but then, sad but true, it is not always the case. As to the insurance companies, they should have the heart to serve other people if they also care for their family and to all that matters to them. This is not just the money they are generating but to think of the millions of members hoping to get help from them. For us, free healthcare is  for everyone. Whether you have an insurance or not, you have the right to get yourself treated. We think it is the government’s responsibility. If only our country will improve their ways of treating us, we will have a good life. No one will starve, no one will suffer, no one will be going home empty-handed and certainly we will be contented. Truly, we appreciated this movie for opening our eyes  into this matter. Kudos!

LIFE IS BEAUTIFUL really deserves Oscars (review)

I was very sentimental and I really cried when we watched Life Is Beautiful (or in French, La Vie Est Belle). The movie was really touching as it was set during the 30s. It was a story of a Jewish man who had a wonderful romance with the help of his humour. With the comic relief at the beginning, I was able to assess that every scene is entertaining.

ABOUT THE MOVIE

The love between Guido and Dora was unconditional as Dora chose Guido despite that she was engaged with a rich Fascist man. Just as Guido loves her, they went away from Dora's parents and five years later they had a son named Giosue. The family lived a happy and simple life, Dora is a teacher and Guido is having a bookstore. They were able to sustain their needs. Even though they were discriminated by the residents living there (because they were Jews) they just ignored it and always taught Giosue to disregard it. They had their hopes and dreams too for Giosue's future until one day, from work, Dora was just shocked having their door swung open with a mess on the floor. She was worried where her husband and son had gone until she realized the two were sent to the Nazi concentration camp.

Amidst the fuss and the tension getting up, they were still a family together as Dora joined the camp too. As for the poor Giosue, Guido was doing all his best to hide him as well as convincing him that what is going on is just a game and all they have to do is to earn points by being silent and refrain from asking food. All throughout the movie Giosue is innocent and he was positive that they will get the first prize, having a real tank!!! The story ended when Guido was shot after being caught. Days later, the Nazi government decided to stop the persecution. Giosue saw his mom after that.

REFLECTION

My over all view of this movie is that it was really hard for the Jewish people to live simply with freedom and dignity. They were discriminated and always at the bottom. Therefore I conclude that I am lucky to be in this moment of time, where I am free to exercise my right and to have a clean reputation as a citizen. As for this movie, you deserve more the honor, and my salutation. Have an enjoying Saturday!!
